Homeschool Highlights - Week of May 8, 2011

Sunday: 

What a weekend!  Morgan's prom was yesterday and the afterprom was today, so we are all out of whack!

Read aloud:  We read a pile of books.  My favorite one was called Celebrating Mother's Day.  It gave a great idea for making a memory box. 

Speaking of Mother's Day, Shayla designed my Mother's Day card and the grandma's and her biggest sister's.  (art)

Phys Ed:  Played outside all day on this beautiful day.  She had a great time playing with three of her cousins.  Running, jumping, swinging, playing baseball, and anything else you could imagine.

Monday: 
Bible:  The Lord's Prayer.  Matthew 6:9-13
Devotions:  Thank You God!  John 21:1-14
Reading:  Come One, Come All:  Poems:  The Muddle, Lost at the Zoo, Story:  Tye May and the Magic Brush
Language/phonics:  Lessons 136-138
Math:  Made fact families using dominos.  Discussed logic/reasoning skills.
Spelling:  Write Long O words in sentences

Handwriting:  Psalm 34:3-4  O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together.  I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.

Tuesday: 

Earth Day celebration at the state park.  I know the official Earth Day has passed, but our community celebrates later in the spring to hopefully have a nice weather day.

• Reviewed flashcards
• Practiced subtraction facts
• Put a tray full of 10 toys out.  Shayla counted the toys.  I took away some and Shayla made an equation.

Social Studies/art:  Countries and cultures:  Honduras. 

•  Finished her paper pollo project.
• Found this idea on Family Fun for Cinco de Mayo (yeah, we're a little late celebrating, as usual :)  She made a bark painting, but not out of bark, out of a paper bag. 

Homeschool Highlights - Week of May 15, 2011

Sunday: 

No worship services for us today!  We were all dressed and ready to go, but Shayla's bad attitude prevented us from going.  Oh well, we'll try again next week after working on behavior issues at home.  :(

After the attitude got adjusted, we had a wonderful day! 

Read Aloud: 

Read a pile of books from our bookcase.

Learning Games: 

• Played several memory matching games.
• Played Sorry!
• Fruit of the Spirit board game (similar to Candyland)
• Played on Fur Real Friends website

We did many art activities today.  Here are just a few:

• Shayla painted a picture of Jack and the Beanstalk on her easel using her squeeze and paint.
• Made a Crazy Colors picture.  Rubber band several crayons together and color and make a design.
• Made several Crumple Paint pictures.  Crumple up a piece of paper and use to blot paint onto paper.  We discussed color mixing, too.
• Nectar Sippers.  Cut flowers out of cupcake liners.  This idea came from Family Fun.
• Sticker art.  Shayla took a sheet of stickers and made a scene with the stickers and drew in other effects.

Monday: 

When will the rain and cold weather stop?  UGH!  We skipped our field trip to the nature center today.

Bible:  Psalm 23

Devotions: Not Blown Away.  John 16:33

Phys Ed/OT:  Testing for foot dominance. 

• Kicked ball 3x with right foot
• Wrote name with foot - 2x with left and 1x with right

She seems to have a mixed dominance with her feet.

Reading:  A Duck is a Duck:  Theme 2:  What Is It?

Language/phonics:  Lessons 143-144

Math: 

• Used number line to solve subtraction problems with numbers above 10.
• Played Boggle Math Jr. - Match It!
• Played Easy Addition War card game.  For the first time ever, she did not have to count the pictures while playing!  Woo-hoo! 
• Reviewed add/sub flashcards (0-10).  I am working with a smaller stack and she seemed to get most correct today.  Woo-hoo!

Spelling/Phys Ed/Language/Math:  How do these subjects have anything in common?  If you have a hands-on learner, you can relate.  LOL!

• Reviewed consonants and vowels.
• Spelled each long o spelling word aloud. 
• If the letter was a consonant, we jumped on both feet, if the letter was a vowel, we jumped on one foot (which mostly was her right foot)
• Discussed patterns (ie hope 2-1-2-1)

Science:  Discovering Seasons:  Summer

• Discussed favorite things about summer. 
• What's the weather like in summer.
• Made a book describing what you wear in summer, what birds are doing in summer, what animals are doing in summer, what plants and the ground is like in summer.
• Painted a picture of tree in summer

Social Studies:  Countries & Cultures:  Central America:  Costa Rica.  Watched a you tube on life in Costa Rica.

Handwriting:  Started Badge 10.  Psalm 121:1-2.  I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.  My help cometh from the Lord which made heaven and earth.

Social Studies:  Character Lessons: Watched a Berenstain Bear movie.  I love using these as discussion starters.  They present troubled behavior issues in a non-threatening way.

Friday: 

Happy 10th Birthday, Shayla! 

What a day, first an appointment in the big city with the pediatric neurologist and back home.  After lunch we had to go to another town to order her Abeka materials. 

Finally late in the afternoon, the party began!

She got a butterfly hatching kit, a new bedset, pajamas, and a t-shirt.  Oh, and that twisty slide on the ground, well that is a birthday work-in-progress.  It is her very own playground.

 

Saturday:  Diary of a Wimpy Kid party at our library.  I love library programs!  They are always so much fun!  I didn't really understand the significance of all the games because it has been some time since we watched the movie and we have not read any of the books yet, but even at that, it was still fun!

Homeschool Highlights - Week of May 22, 2011

Sunday:  Worship services.  The sermon was about what part you play in Christ's body.  Shayla didn't really take much from the service, but she did enjoy the music, and singing, and being together as a family.

Monday:
Bible:  Proverbs 3:5-6
Devotions:  Chips and Cupcakes.  Titus 2:11-14

Reading: 

• Read The Cat in the Hat (reading)
• Discussed rhyming words (spelling)
• Wrote rhyming words -at, -an, -me, -in, -et (writing, spelling)
• Made a Cat in the Hat hat

Language/phonics:  Lessons 149-150

Spelling:  Long O words.  Used waffle blocks with spelling words on them.  Rolled and made a sentence using both words.  Wrote sentences on the white board.

Handwriting:  Psalm 121:5-6  The Lord is thy keeper:  the Lord is thy shade upon thy right hand.  The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.

Science:  Watched You Tubes on how MRI tests are performed.  And later in the afternoon, she had one done.

Tuesday:

Devotions:  Which God is True?  1 Kings 18:36-39

Reading/creative writing/art:  Write and illustrate a silly rhyming story.

Language/phonics:  Lessons 151-152

Spelling:  Test 100% correct :)

Handwriting:  Psalm 121:7-8.  The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil:  he shall preserve thy soul.  The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth and even forevermore.

Health/4-H:  I Spy in the Kitchen:  The Secet of the Food Guide Pyramid.  We learned about the food pyramid and learned that Shayla is eating according to the guidelines, with the exception of milk/dairy.

Science:  Discovering Seasons - Fall.  A Time to Get Ready.

• Painted a picture of a tree in fall

Health/4-H:  I Spy in the Kitchen:  Clues in the Kitchen.  This was like a scavenger hunt in my kitchen drawers!

Handwriting:  John 14:12  Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also, and greater words than these shall he do, because I go unto my Father.

Friday:

Language/Phonics:  Lessons 155-156

Homeschool Highlights - Week of May 1, 2011

Sunday: 

Bible:  Attended worship services.  This was especially fun because Dad was able to attend with us today!  The message:  Eat Your Lima Beans!  Yeah, that brought up some conversation today!

Phys Ed:  Played Wii Fit and outside playtime (between rain showers).

Nothing really in the way of schoolwork, but I was pleased in several ways today.  First off, she did some independent playing for a lengthy amount of time.  She thought of original story ideas, then played it out with her little people. 

I know some are scratching their heads right now, but Shayla has problems with engaging in activities by herself and playing. 

Another first, she held little Sophie by herself!  Again, this is a milestone in our home, but confusing to others. 

We have had all kinds of baby puppies, kittens, and about every other animal.  Shayla has never held one.  This is the first time ever!

Monday: 

Bible:  About Mother and Father:  We Should Obey Them.  Ephesians 6:1-3, Exodus 20:12, Proverbs 1:8

Devotions:  New Creatures.  2 Corinthians 5:17

Reading:  Come One, Come All:  Aesop's Fables:  The Lion and the Mouse (a play)
We really enjoyed acting out this play together. 

Language/Phonics:  Lessons 127-128.  are in care special sounds and alphabetical order

Math: Reviewed subtraction facts flashcards and solved addition and subtraction problems playing Bears on Logs

Spelling:  Long i words.  Acted out words and verbally spelled.  Finger traced yarn words while verbally spelling.

Science:  Discovering Seasons.  Read books about seasons

• Spring

Social Studies:  Countries and Cultures:  Central America:  Honduras

Read library books about Honduras and viewed pictures of our sponsor child from Honduras receiving the gift packages we have sent starting in October 2010.  Yes, this is something new, just received the email Friday, she just received these packages! 

Handwriting:  Psalm 100:5  For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.

Art:  Painted some more on her ceramic teddy bear.

Phys Ed:  Wii Fit.  I thought I should quit my day job of being a housewife and homeschool mom to become a professional bowler with my score of 158.  Well Shayla blew that dream to pieces.  She scored a 232!

Language/phonics:  Lessons 129-130

Math:  Subtraction 1-10.  Put flashcards in order.  Discussed patterns, logic, reasoning, prediction

Reviewed addition flashcards 1-10

Spelling:  Test.  Scored 100% (8 out of 8 correct)

Scouts at Home/Health:  Safety Sense badgework. 

• Read safety themed books and discussed street safety. 
• We worked on this hands-on several weeks ago when we went to the big city and discussed crossing lights and when it's safe to walk. 
• Learned the street crossing poem:  Before you cross the street, use your eyes, use your ears, then you use your feet!

Handwriting:  Psalm 34:1  I will bless the Lord at all times:  his praise shall continually be in my mouth.

Wednesday:

Thursday: 
The day started off well, but the busyness of life finally wore me down, I ended up on the couch for several hours.  But we did several hours of school before and several hours after I started to feel better.

Devotions:  Take it to the Lord.  Philippians 4:6

Phys Ed:  Outside activities and Wii sports resort

Foreign Language:  Watched a Signing Time DVD.

4-H meeting: 
The kids worked on scratching out a clover shape on a tile.  (art, fine motor)

Then they planted flowers for Mother's Day.

When the meeting was finished we walked over to the high school for an art show, as part of her Art as Expression work. 

Friday:

Overdid it yesterday.  UGH!  Missed my monthly meeting with IS coordinator.

Language/Phonics:  Lessons 119-120

Math:  Going back to the curriculum from last year.  It's more hands-on. 

Logical Order.  Presented addition fact cards in order (If 2+2=4, then 2+3 is one more, etc, etc)  At the same time, I showed the opposite card 2+3 and 3+2.  We also used wooden blocks to figure some. 

Reviewed flashcards.

Spelling:  We went back to last year's curriculum for spelling, too.

Long i words.  Reviewed the when two vowels go walking, the first vowel does the talking rule. 

Did the pre-test.  She did not score well on these words, so we corrected each word, then copied them one more time each.

Handwriting:  Starting Badge 9.

Tuesday:
Science:  Discovering Seasons. 

Winter.  A Time for Rest.

• Read science text. pgs. 114-118
• Completed Animals in Winter worksheet
• Read books about winter and explained it using the globe.
• Made a book called Winter.  Shayla copied these sentences and filled in the blanks and illustrated a book.  Example:  In winter I wear...., In winter the animals are..., In winter the plants..., etc. (art, writing, language)
• Made a winter scene using black construction paper and white chalk (art)
• Made a paper snowflake using a coffee filter
• Did two experiments showing that air is everywhere.  There is air in the water for the fish.  Fill a glass with water and look at it every ten minutes.  Bubbles form at the top.  These bubbles are air.
• Filled a glass with soil and poured water in.  The bubbles that rose to the top of the soil are air bubbles. 
• Painted a picture that shows what trees look like in winter. 

Bible:  Our Tongue:  Speak Pleasantly.  Provers 16:24, 25:11, 1 Peter 3:10

Devotions:  Drop in Near Jesus.  Mark 2:1-12  The story of Jesus healing the paralyzed man.

Reading:  Come One, Come All:  One Foot, Now the Other.  Tomie DePaola's story about his grandfather being a part of a child's life and how the child teaches the grandfather after his stroke.

Read Aloud:  A book about the Dominican Republic.  Shayla picked this out of the library.

Art:  Painted ceramic teddy bear.

Social Studies:  Panama.  Located on the globe. Read library books about the country and culture of Panama.  Our Panama project comes from The Kids' Multicultural Cookbook.  It is taste testing oven roasted cashews and pineapple.  Two traditional foods from Panama.

Phys Ed:  Wii Fit, basketball, and jumped on the trampoline

Language/Phonics:  Lessons 121-122

Math:  Counting on for Addition game. 

Roll one die and take that many counters away, roll again and take that many counters away.  Write down the addition problem. (ex:  This one was 4+4)

Reviewed flashcards.

Spelling:  Wrote sentences using long i words.

Handwriting:  Psalm 100:3  Know ye that the Lord he is God:  it is he that hath made us and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

*Note:  Shayla complained of ringing in her ears today.

*Note:  Today Shayla is frequently making letters backwards today (b and d). 

Science:  Since the sun was actually shining for awhile and Shayla was having difficulties today, we went out on a nature walk to identify wildflowers/herbs and discussed some medicinal properties. 

*Note:  She also took most of the nature pictures since photography and scrapbooking are two of her 4-H projects! :)

Bible:  Our Tongue: The Tongue is Little, but it Can Do Great Harm.  James 3:2-5

Devotions/science:  Can Sin Stick?  1 John 5:18-20.  We did a science experiment for this, too.  Put a small amount of salt on a plate, mix in a little bit of pepper.  Next, take a comb and rub it on a piece of felt.  Then hold it above the salt and pepper, the pepper magically clings onto the comb.

Reading: Come One, Come All:  The Tortoise and the Hare, Poem:  The Tortoise and the Hare (in rhyme)

Language/Phonics:  Lessons 125-126

Spelling:  Wrote words with glue and covered with yarn pieces.  After dried, spelled with fingers touching words.

Received Badge 8 prize pack several weeks ago and forgot to post about it.  She was very excited to get the teddy bear in this one.  It gave her the strength to continue, in her words. 

Saturday:  Ended the week with a visit from oldest sister, Cassandra and niece, Makayla.  Shayla was not real happy about this (but the rest of us were!) She was extremely jealous when her dad paid attention to the baby! 



Homeschool Highlights - Week of April 17, 2011

 Sunday:

Read aloud:  We snuggled together on this dreary day and read a pile of library books that Shayla had chosen last week.  It was fun to sit and take the time to do this.  We haven't done this in so long.

Social Studies:  Finished reading the Operation Christmas Child newsletter and identifying countries on the globe. 

Our power went out for about 3 hours.  I never realized how much we miss it.  Maybe our family needs to look into purchasing a generator because I don't think I could last long without electric.

Monday: 

WHAT A DAY!  Shayla was up half the night vomiting.  She didn't appear to have any other symptoms and she said her stomach did not hurt.  I decided to let her sleep in after the rough night for the whole family.  I was just getting ready to check on her again just before 10am when I heard a pitiful whining sound.  I thought the new puppy had found her room and wanted to wake her.  WRONG!  Instead I discovered it was Shayla.  I thought she was being silly and went to her.  She was in the middle of a full blown seizure!  OMG!  Words can not even begin to describe how I felt as my baby lay there with her eyes rolled up in her head and thrashing all over!  I didn't know if she was dreaming or what since she had never had a seizure before.  I tried to wake her up, then came the awful gurgling, coughing sound and the gasping for air.  I assume she was trying to swallow her tongue.  Having never experienced this before, I picked her up and moved her to the couch because I couldn't get into her bunkbed with her very well. 

I talked, yelled, and cried to her.  I held her head and looked into her eyes.  She couldn't make eye contact with me.  When the seizure started to settle down, she looked at me, but I could tell she did not recognize me.  Then all of the sudden, I could see it coming over her face.  She recognized me and tried to speak, but the words wouldn't come. 

I'm sure the whole ordeal only lasted a few minutes, but at that time, my whole world stood still! 

I got some children's advil down her, followed by some water.  Then we got dressed and went to the ER for her to be checked out.  Before we left, her appetite returned and she asked for breakfast.  By the time we got to the ER, she acted completely normal. 

The doctor said it was a febrile seizure.  He is hopeful that she will not seize again because these particular seizures usually occur in infants - age 5.  It is when the body heats up too quickly and the brain can not compensate and shuts down. 

If this were not bad enough, my husband left work to go to the hospital with us.  He had to take a point for leaving.  This is only the third point he has had in over ten years!

He even returned to work after we got home and settled down.  Then they gave him a letter that said that he would have to get permission from his doctor before May 2 to continue to be employed there.  I can not disclose much now, but I will say that he suffers from a work related injury!  Now they are going to can him?!?  REALLY!?!

Shayla was excited to show off her hospital id bracelet.

Social Studies:  We snuggled together as a family and watched a Berenstain Bears movie.  These books and movies are great discussion starters presented in a non-threatening way to discuss behavioral topics.

Phys ed:  Jumping on the trampoline.  Seriously!  The same girl that about gave me heart failure this morning was feeling up to getting some fresh air and bouncing around!

Read Aloud:  Flat Stanley.  We have heard so much about this book, so I had to get it.  We were disappointed.  It definately wasn't as fun as we expected.

Math:  Reviewed flashcards and made some with index cards and rubber stamps.

Easter Egg-stravaganza at our church.  Shayla made a placemat (art), listened to a devotional, and participated in the egg hunt.

Egg hunt in our own backyard.

The girls talked me into giving them their baskets early.  I know, I'm a push-over, but they put up a good arguement.  They wanted dad to be able to see their joy as they opened their baskets.  Young politicians in the making!
