Language: Linking verbs. The verbs is and are do not seem like other verbs because they don’t express an action. Both are present tense and are used to link two like things or a noun and an adjective. Us is with one person, place or thing. Use are with more than one. Examples: My pet is a Pomeranian. The rocks are heavy. The dog is friendly. The carrots are orange.

Use popsicle sticks. Shayla sets up a number such as 19 on the place value board. Discuss meaning of 19. Count by ones, then add one more stick. How many now? Discuss 20. Count by ones, then exchange 10 singles for a group of ten. Put bundle in tens column. Why does this show 20?
