Math: Study patterns on hundred chart. Notice the tens place change as you scan down the chart. Ones increase across the chart. Circle patterns on the Hundred Chart. Look at numbers 1, 11, 21, 31, and 41. Describe how the numbers are related. Example: the tens place increases in counting order while the ones place stays the same.

Math: Place Value and Two-Digit Addition (w/no regrouping) Using blocks, place 4 tens and 6 ones on a place value board for Shayla to identify. If she says 46 w/o counting by ones, she may be ready for two-digit addition.
Game time: Shayla builds 32 sticks. Roll a die to determine number of sticks to add. Add and count. Write on board and say addition sentence verbally.
Activity: Make an acrostic poem using the word SEPTEMBER
Reading: Shayla’s pick! Read a book and she writes a book report on it. She chose to write a report on the book, Fancy Nancy.
Language: An asking sentence is called a question. Provide examples of questions. Discuss the punctuation-the question mark tells you that the sentence is a question. Complete Questions 1 pg 309
Language: Shayla reads a newspaper article and highlights any linking or helping words used.

Activity: Counting by 10’s, write the numbers to 100.
Activity: Draw a picture of a character from your favorite story. She chose Mouse from If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.
Math: Shayla builds 23 with sticks. Record 23 on lined paper. Roll a die to determine number of sticks to add. Write “+4” (roll of die) below 23. Add and count sticks. Record the total below. Have Shayla read addition sentence out loud. Example: 23+4=27

Math: Write a two-digit addition problem that does not require regrouping. Have Shayla build each number with sticks, then combine all the ones at the bottom of the ones column. Record the total. Repeat with different numbers.

Reading/language: Review adding –ing to verbs when they have a helping verb. Examples:
I play –I am playing
You play – You are playing
He plays – He is playing
Have Shayla apply the verbs sleep, write, and jump to the following subjects and helping verbs: I am, You are, He is, We are, They are
Language: Before reading a non-fiction book, encourage Shayla to think about what she would like to know about the topic. Then work together to compose 10 questions. Read the book and discuss the answers. If all the questions are not answered, find other books on the topic. Use Questions pg 310.

Math: Test. Scored 100%. Did have focusing problems, I gave minimal assistance mostly in the way of encouragement.

Social Studies: Around the World. Australia. Highlights Top Secret Adventures. Read Pgs 8-9 The First City. Complete pg. 2-3 Suitcase Match
Activity: Write 4 different addition sentences with answers of 8.
Math: Make a page of two-digit addition problems that do not require regrouping. Shayla can use manipulatives to solve problems.
Reading: Read The Napping House by Audrey Wood. Shayla lists words with –ing endings. Rewrite each phrase containing an –ing ending into a sentence with a helping verb. Example: the dreaming child becomes the child is dreaming.
We had a lot of fun with this book!
Reading: Review location words/following directions. Read Inside, Outside, Upside down. Take photos of Shayla in, on, over, next to, behind and under items. Make a location scrapbook!

Language: Make a mystery box out of a shoe box decorated with question marks. Secretly hide a familiar object in the box. Shayla asks questions to determine the contents. Write each question on the whiteboard. When Shayla guesses correctly, open the box. Note that many questions begin with the words: who, what, how, why, where, and when.
