Homeschool Highlights - Week of February 27, 2011


Monday:
No public schools, again!  This time we're closed because of flooding.  At this rate, the kids are going to be watching the July 4th fireworks from the classrooms.  But, alas, we don't take flood or snow days off in homeschool.

Bible:  Jesus and the Blind Man:  Jesus Make the Blind Man See.  Luke 18:40-43

Devotions:  Pick One.  Galatians 3:26-29

Reading:  The Golden Touch, Queen Bee

Read Aloud:  Donald and His Friends.

Math:  Various addition fact worksheet practice

Bible:  God Made Families. 

*We started this lesson several weeks ago, but never finished it, so we'll just start it over again.

Read God Made Families and Berenstain Bears We Are a Family.  Defined families and discussed the dynamics of different kinds of families.  Looked through a Parenting magazine and discussed the families in the magazine. 

Helping My Family: 
We discussed different ways that Shayla could help our family.  Some of her ideas included: 

  • dishes
  • laundry
  • dusting
  • behaving
  • obeying
  • being helpful
  • being kind
  • being encouraging
  • helping out when other's are sick
My Home:
Discussed
Shayla and I built a house using plastic waffle blocks.  (*Note to self:  I was surprised that she did not have the fine motor strength to put these together without assistance) (fine motor skills)

She enjoyed playing with it with her Little People "kids."

This is the Way:
What are some of the things families do together?  (ie..eating, reading, playing, working, etc) (music)

Sang:
The is the way my family eats, family eats, family eats
This is the way my family eats, when we are together.

My Family: 
Made a paper house and paper doll family members.   (art)





Playing House:

Used baby dolls, play kitchen area, and family members to play house.  (imaginative play)

Tuesday:

Bible:  Jesus Calms the Sea:  The Sea Obeys.  Matthew 8:23-27

Devotions:  Praise be to God!  Psalm 66:1-2

Reading:  Hidden Treasures:  All Things Beautiful, Pandora's Box

Field Trip:  CTF production of Ellis Island. 

Social Studies:  The theater production brought up some interesting discussion.  We talked about freedoms and immigrants, some of the reasons people came to America.  We also discussed where some of our own ancestors came from.

Wednesday:

Specials day
Ballet and clogging lessons

Thursday: 

Bible:  Jesus Wants Children to Come to Him:  Jesus Loves the Little Children.  Matthew 19:13-15

Devotions:  Does God Answer Prayer?  1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Reading:  Hidden Treasures.  Hidden Treasure, How to be Rich, Raggylug, Only One Mother

Read Aloud:  Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs

Language/phonics:  Lesson 96.  Alphabetical Order.  Shayla picked up on this with ease.

Math:  Lesson 102

Writing:  Psalm 91:13  Thou shalt tread upon the lion and the adder:  the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.

Friday:

Bible:  Jesus and Zacchaeus:  Zacchaeus Comes to See Jesus.  Luke 19:1-5. 
Music/Bible:  Sang Zacchaeus was a Wee Little Man.

Devotions:  Fill Your Trays.  Matthew 25:1-13

Reading:  Hidden Treasure:  Hansel the Shepherd Boy, If I Were a Rose

Read Aloud:  In Which we are Introduced to Winnie-the-Pooh and Some Bees, and the Stories Began

Math:  Addition workbook pages 1-15.  Simple counting, addition

Writing:  Psalm 91:14 Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him:  I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.
