Homeschool Highlights - Week of January 30, 2011

Bible:  Happy is the man that finds wisdom.  Proverbs 3:13

We made this cute paper plate mask.
The person without wisdom is without happiness

God's wisdom makes us happy!

  • Played with playdoh.
  • Sorted a deck of cards first by color, then by each suit.
Read Aloud:  Finished The Mare's Tale.  (Shayla's library book pick)
Monday:

  • Read John 1:3 and Matthew 4:4
  • Devotions:  Hungry Fish and People.  Luke 5:1-11

Read aloud:  Ramona the Pest by Beverly Cleary.

Language/phonics:  Lesson 89.

Handwriting:  Psalm 91:10  There shall no evil befall then, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

Kings Kids program.

Tuesday:

Snow day (or more accurate, an ice day) for area schools, but not for us.  Hubby thought Shayla should have a snow day, too, but she said, "No, I like school."  So we will trudge forward, although I am taking frequent breaks to get things done.  I am in storm mode in case of losing electric.

Bible:
Jesus Ministers:  Jesus Explains About Being Born Again.  John 3:4-13

Devotions:  Wherever You Go.  Luke 9:23

Reading:  Aesop's Fables.
  • The Fox and the Crow.  Moral:  Don't be fooled by flattery.
  • The Rooster and the Piece of Gold.  Moral:  Don't worry about things you don't need
Read Aloud:  Ramona the Pest.

Math:  Lesson 99.

Wednesday:

Thankfully we kept our electric, but definately another snow day for the public school.  Since we are under a Level 2 Snow Emergency, if this continues there probably won't be school for most of the week.  Shayla's school also cancelled Specials Day.

Bible:  Jesus Ministers:  Jesus Tells About God's Great Love.  John 3:14-17.

Devotions:  We Have Hope.  1 Corinthians 15:19-22

Reading:  Aesop's Fables:

  • The Ants and the Lazy Grasshoppers.  Moral:  Be prepared, don't be lazy.
  • The Fox and the Crab.  Moral:  Obey your parents.
Read Aloud:  Ramona the Pest.

Language/phonics:  Watched Touch Phonics video.  IMHO, this looks like a good program, but way too pricey for my budget.  We can do the same things with homemade manipulatives or letter magnets.

I do like the concept, though.  The ideas of different colors for different parts of words works well with the right-brain learner.

Thursday:

Yet another snow day for Morgan.  By now, Shayla is thinking she needs a snow day, too!

Bible:  Jesus Ministers:  Jesus Heals a Sick Man.  Luke 5:12-15

Devotions: Not Many Teachers.  James 3:1

Reading:  Aesop's Fables:
  • The Stag at the Lake.  Moral:  Don't be proud.
Read Aloud:  Ramona the Pest.

Phys Ed:  Played Wii Fit with Morgan and me.  Shayla is just like the Energizer bunny.  She keeps going, and going, and going.  Me, not so much, the short run about caused a heart attack.  I think I'm going to be feeling body parts tomorrow that I forgot I had!

Friday:

Monthly meeting with the I.S. Administrator.

Grocery shopping.  (Discussed sale prices/coupons, healthy vs unhealthy choices, organics/non-organics etc).  Shayla is now starting to take a more active role in helping with the shopping responsibility :)

Went shopping for our sponsor child in Honduras gift package.  We talked about the climate and what kind of needs Jazmin may have.  The girls each picked out things and Morgan even bought some things with her own money.  In the end, we filled a large tote of items, including skirts, shirts, rainboots, umbrella, rain poncho, a doll, a ball, and many other things.

It warms my heart to see my girls being so helpful and giving.  When we were checking out of the store, they joyfully put everything onto the conveyor belt.  The people next to us in line commented on how well behaved the girls were being.  Yay!
