Homeschool Highlights - Week of October 17, 2010

Weekend Schooling:
Attended worship services. 
  • Continued our study of leaves.
  • Finished our read aloud:  Junie B. Jones and the Mushy Gushy Valentine.  After finishing, Shayla made her own "Valentime."
  • Bible Devotions:  Mourning into Joy.  Jeremiah 31:11-14.  This was on the topic of death and it was a great discussion time.  She also learned some new vocabulary words!
Monday:

Field Trip:  Theater.  Watched the play, If You Give a Cat a Cupcake. Based on the children's book by Laura Joffe Numeroff.

* Recently we had been talking about compound words and syllables.  Shayla clapped out "cupcake" and said "Mom, cupcake is a compound word."  :)  Woo-hoo!  She got it! 

Tuesday:

Bible:  Samson.  God Promises a way of deliverance.
Devotions: Surprised by Joy.  John 14:28-31
Reading:  Finished Stepping Stones.  Jack Be Nimble, Homes, To Market, To Market, Fun with -ed, One, Two, Buckle My Shoe, Little Boy Blue.
Spelling:  Verbally reviewed words
Math:  Lesson 67
Science:  My Ears
Field Trip:  Visited our local library for seasonal books and for social studies lessons.

Unit Study:  If You Give a Cat a Cupcake. 

To go along with the play we watched, we baked some cupcakes and of course used lots of sprinkles. 

Shayla also colored a paper cat and cupcake and told about her favorite part of the play for creative writing.

Wednesday: 

Independent Studies Day!  A fun filled day of library, music, art, activity time, phys ed, lunch and recess, followed by dance lessons!

Thursday:

Field trip to Lifelink Christian Missions to drop off packages for our sponsor child, Jasmin in Honduras, and dropped off packages for the rest of our church. 

While we were here, we were given a tour, told about the history of Lifeline and what they do, discussed missions trips, and learned about the culture and people of Haiti, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Panama. 
(social studies, geography, character studies - kindness, sharing, giving)

Field Trip:  Voting.  We stopped to vote at our local Board of Elections office.  We explained how it is more important than ever to vote for candidates that we believe to be the best choice. 
(social studies)

Foreign language:  Watched several Signing Time DVD's while in the car. 

Friday:

* The fire safety we learned about last week was made real this week.  My Sister in law's home burnt last night.  We discussed this and will have more details later.  

Bible:  Samson Goes God's Way.
Devotions:  On the Clouds.  1 Thessalonians 4:15-18
Read aloud:  Read a handful of misc. library books and Junie B. Jones is Almost a Flower Girl
Reading:  Secrets and Surprises:  Let's Go!  At the Pond.
Language/phonics/Spelling:  Lessons 53 and 54.  Completed test 8 - scored 148 out of 150!  Introduced list 9 - copied each word 1x each.
Math:  Lesson 68
Science:  Read Dr. Seuss' Ear Book and Hear It!  Did rubber band experiment.
Read My Nose and read Smell It!
