Homeschool Day 25 - Weds. Oct 8, 2008

Today we celebrated fall by doing some fun fall things. I sometimes forget that the most memorable part of school for me was the fun themes we did, not the papers.

First we made Pumpkin Spice Playdough.

Pumpkin Spice Playdough

1-1/3 c. flour
½ c. salt
2 tsp. cream of tartar
2 T. oil
1 T. pumpkin pie spice
Orange food color (2 pts yellow to 1 pt red)
1 c. water.

Mix all ingredients in a pan. Heat on medium heat and stir until it forms a dough consistency and sides remove from pan.

We used this time to discuss measurements (math)and color mixing (science).

We sorted through all my cookie cutters and found appropriate harvest cutters to use in our new playdough. (sorting) Then we made fall scenes with the cutters and playdough. Yum! It smelled good enough to eat!

Left: My fall scene. Right: Shayla's fall scene.

The next thing we did was watch several Pooh movies (Frankenpooh and Spookable Pooh).

We did the Noticing Changes activities at the Discovery Station here.

We discussed changing seasons and I read several books about changing seasons. (science & reading) We read fall leaf themed books: Robin Hill School – Fall Leaf Project, Fall Leaves, Why Do Leaves Change in the Fall? (science & reading)

We will spend the afternoon finishing up our scouts try-it requirements for the Careers badge. (social studies)
