Homeschool Highlights - Week of April 3, 2011

Sunday:

Read aloud:  Enjoyed reading Horton Hears a Who and Horton Hatches the Egg.

Bible:  I Am Happy at Church.  Psalm 122:1

Jump for Joy.  We jumped around while listening to Christian kids music.
Make a Joyful Noise.  Got out the box of instruments and made a joyful (or not so) noise unto the Lord.

After instruments, we sang the songs in this song book.  Even though it was clearly for babies and toddlers, we had fun with it.

Singing Scarves.  While listening to Action Bible Songs cd, we danced around the house with scarves.

Notice how many of my pictures are blurry?  That's because Shayla is in constant motion.  She has two speeds:  fast and faster.  My camera can't seem to keep up, even when adjusting the shutter speeds.

The week I have been dreading since signing up with the Christian school last summer.  Standardized Testing in the a.m. Mon.-Thurs. Yuck!

Devotions:  Wonderful Whispers.  1 Kings 19:9-13

Reading:  Little Duck Dance.  Who's Next Door?  The Neighborhood Pet Show, New Neighbors, In the Neighborhood

Math:  Listened to Addition Songs Cd.  Although Shayla usually does well learning to music, I don't think this is going to work.  Let's just say, she happily sings along with the wrong words or answers to the addition problems!  LOL!

Science:  Seasons.

  • Read Discovering Seasons pgs 112-113
  • Read library books about changing seasons
  • Read Fredrick by Leo Lionni.  Followed by discussion.
Social Studies/Art:  Made these crafts for Central America studies:

The Worry Doll.  Children tell their worries to these dolls, simply made out of clothespins and yarn.  Then they place them under their pillows at night.
A cardboard weaving loom.  I was surprised that Shayla was really interested in this.  We have tried weaving projects in the past and she couldn't sit still long enough to do it and became frustrated.  I did assist, but this time she enjoyed it.  We will be working on it small amounts daily until it is complete.
Wednesday:

Bible:  God's Words Help Us to Do Right.  Psalm 119:2, 3, 11

Phys Ed:  Ballet and clogging lessons.

Thursday:
This was the worst day for Standardized Testing.  It has been a long week.  Shayla is not used to getting up so early in the morning and all the stresses of taking tests, etc.

Not to mention that today was her least favorite subject:  math and reasoning.  Let's just say, she froze up.  I would honestly be surprised if she got one answer correct in this section.  At first I could see that she couldn't hardly move, once she did move, she didn't even try to think and solve the problems, she randomly colored in the circles.  But, that's what they were encouraged to do if they did not know the answers.

It was so disasterous that the administrator recommended that we not even complete the OLSAT part of the test.  Shayla was done!  Mentally, physically, DONE!

Oh well, chalk that up to experience!

Bible: God's Word Will Last Forever.  Psalm 119:89, Isaiah 40:8, Matthew 24:35, 1 Peter 1:23-25

Devotions:  Praying with Certainty.  Matthew 6:7-13

Educational Games:  Played memory matching.  Mom won 20 matches to Shayla's 16.

Oh what a sweet little puppy, right?  NOT!  I'm beginning to think this dog is the spawn of satan.  Don't let her small fun size fool you.  She is a terror!  I think a more appropriate name for her would have been Killer, instead of Sophie.
She whines all night, and wants to sleep all day.  She bites, growls, and seems to reject all signs of affection.  She attacks your legs anytime you dare put them on the floor to walk!  Oh, and chewing!  Don't even think of leaving a pair of shoes or anything on the floor!  Lol!
