Homeschool Highlights - Week of January 10, 2010

Reading:  Book 5 - Series 3 Bad Luck.

Math:  We did a packet of worksheets.  Reviewed telling time. More and less, etc.

Language/Writing/Art/Geography:  I read aloud some nursery rhymes from the Childcraft Encyclopedia.  Shayla picked her favorite one (Song of the Frog, traditionally from Japan).  We located Japan, then she copied the nursery rhyme on storyboard paper and illustrated the top of the page.

Unit Study:  U is for Universe.  We are finishing up letter Uu (I hoped to be done last week, but she was very interested in all the themes so far, so we're working at her pace.)

Today we started making a labeled picture of all the planets.  She was really into this project.  I told her we needed to go outside NOW, if she wanted to have some outside playtime today, because it would be dark after Kings Kids.  This brought on a small meltdown!  Yes, she was actually torn between going outside and finishing her picture.  LOL!  How many homeschoolers would love for their kids to be that into their schoolwork.  :)  But at the same time, it was heartbreaking to see her go through such anxiety over her choice.

In the end, she chose to go outside and get some fresh air, go to Kings Kids, then finish her picture tonight.  (Again, how many homeschoolers would love for their children to be so into something that they want to finish it up during their freetime!?!)

Here's the rest of the letter Uu activities we did.

We had another dentist appointment this week.  We had to spend time mentally preparing for this.  Unfortunately, Shayla had two little cavities.  UGH!  Morgan didn't have any.

*I forgot to mention the most important improvement we have seen since starting enzyme therapy with Shayla.  Her appetite has improved drastically!  Yay!

I also think the enzymes are helping her imaginary play skills.  This may seem like nothing exciting, but Shayla needs improvement in this area.

Not only did we get a lot of formal schooling done during the day, but Shayla's creative juices were flowing at night.

She is pretending to be an Aldi cashier.

Here she and dad created all kinds of pretend food using craft supplies.  She is getting ready to have a candlelight dinner.

Shayla and Dad are making a birdhouse for her friend, Elaine.  Shayla has been racking her brain trying to come up with a good gift to give to Elaine since before Christmas.  The best part is that she had an active part in building it.

Shayla's Ice Cream Shop.  The sign reads $99 for a cone.  That's a steep price to pay, but Shayla said she is sending the profits to the ASPCA - she saw the tv commercial where the animals are abused and neglected.  She wants to help the aninmals.  (At first, she thought we would get the animals.  LOL!)

So that was our week, how did everyone else's week go?
