Homeschool Day 17 - Friday, Sept 26, 2008

The Biggest Bear Unit Study Day!

Reading: First we read The Biggest Bear by Lynd Ward. It is a Caldecott Award winner published in the 1950's. I noticed some of the things in the story Shayla did not understand because it's not a part of our culture anymore (like the smokehouses full of hanging hams) and hanging animal hides on barns. I also had to explain what humiliation meant and a play on words in the story. The characters last name was Orchard and they owned an orchard. We really discussed alot of things with this book (language and social studies).

Writing/Art: We colored by number, cut, and assembled a booklet of the events that happened in the story. I got this from the Literature workbook we use. We expanded on the idea by Shayla telling me in her own words what's going on in the pictures and I wrote her words on the back of the pages. (language/memory)
Art: Shayla sponge painted in a bear shaped outline.
She also made this shadow box:
Language: We discussed the ending of this story. She said she liked the ending because the boy did not have to hurt the bear, he got to live in the zoo.
